Main Environmental Characteristics:
- Established “Environmental Initiatives Suggestion Scheme” to encourage staff to provide environmental initiatives. Staff members whose suggestions were accepted would be awarded with buffet coupon;
- Encouraged staff to take the stairs and posted the benefits of taking the stairs for publicity;
- Reduced electricity consumption through utilizing natural light in the hotel, using energy-saving lamps, allowing casual wear for works etc.;
- Reduced water consumption through installing flow restricting devices in the guest rooms shower of middle and lower floors and installing water-saving toilets;
- Used email for communications to reduce paper consumption;
- Encouraged the hotel restaurants to provide discount to customers who bring their own boxes for takeaway;
Continuous Improvement Items:
- The hotel has reduced the boiler steaming pressure by 38% from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. every day. Such practice can reduce the heat loss by 1,766GJ per year.
- The hotel has stopped operating the main air-conditioning system when the outdoor temperature is below 16oC in order to save electricity.
- The hotel will install water-saving shower heads in guest rooms and staff bathrooms to save water.
- The hotel is going to replace all 35W light bulbs with 3W LED lights to extend lighting life time and reduce electricity consumption.
Some of the environmental measures accomplished:
- collected staff’s green ideas.
- encouraged the use of stairs in the hotel, the advantages of using stairs were listed and disseminated through posters.
- purchased automatic dishwashing detergent without NTA (nitrilotriacetic acid) and phosphates.
- replaced variable voltage variable frequency (VVVF) for 4 lifts.
- installed flash steam vessel to recover steam condensate and return it to boiler.
- offered 5% discount for customers who brought their own meal box for take-away food purchased from bistro.
- implemented soap dispensers in 80% of guest rooms for replacing plastic bottles of soap and shampoo.
- collected used furniture and donated it to the charity.
- applied a 20cm thick acoustic wall in machine rooms.
- distributed environmental messages through the hotel’s TV channel.
