Main Environmental Characteristics:

  • Conducted carbon audits through independent consultants and implemented energy management to identify areas for improvement;
  • Provided incentives or rewards to staff for their environmental initiatives or innovation;
  • Ensured that staff can access to environmental information and reference materials through staff notice boards and internet;
  • Adjusted the electrical equipment appropriately according to the guest room occupancy rate of the hotel; and installed independent sub-meters to monitor electricity consumption of the devices in golf courses, cafes and laundries, etc.;
  • Issued environmental guidelines to staff working in the laundry to ensure full load before switching on the washing machines, switching off the machines if they are not in use and inspecting machines to ensure that there are no leakage;
  • Equipped with greywater recycling system (sewage treatment plant) and used the treated effluent for irrigation;
  • Planted large number of plants in the hotel;
  • Broadcast green messages through the guest room TV channel.

Continuous Improvement Items:

  • The hotel has implemented an energy saving system for water pumps and achieved about 200,000 kWh of electricity saving annually.
  • In 2010, the hotel will install a heat recovery system for the laundry in order to save energy for air-conditioning and hot water production.

Some of the environmental measures accomplished:

  • appointed the Green Manager as leader to coordinate the environmental programme of the hotel.
  • established a Life Safety and Environmental Awareness Committee to steer and facilitate the environmental programme implementation.
  • encouraged staff members to submit ideas and suggestions on green initiatives, staff providing good ideas were awarded with one night stay or dinner buffet for two in the hotel.
  • installed a system to recycle grey water, around 70% of grey water is being recycled for garden irrigation.
  • installed timers and a Building Management System on lighting facilities.
  • checked energy usage weekly through independent consultant.
  • collected fresh air from the bath fan in non-occupied floors and returned the air to circulate in occupied floors.
  • installed a flash steam vessel to recover steam condensate and return it to the boiler.
  • shared the environmental achievements in newspapers, hotel guidebooks and magazines.
